If you are applying to IGNOU in 2026 — fresh admission or re-registration — there is one thing you must do before anything else: create your DEB ID. Without it, the portal will not let you complete your form, and every admission cycle we see students discover this at 11 PM on the last date.

What Is a DEB ID and Why Is It Suddenly Mandatory?

The DEB ID is a unique identification number issued through the UGC‘s Distance Education Bureau portal. UGC made it mandatory for all students enrolling in any open, distance, or online programme from the 2024-25 academic sessions onwards — that includes every IGNOU learner.

Why UGC did this is actually good news for you: the DEB ID system links students only to recognised institutions and approved programmes. It exists to stop people from unknowingly enrolling in unapproved courses. Since IGNOU is a Central university with full recognition, the DEB ID is just a formality for you — but a compulsory one.

IGNOU has also extended the requirement to existing students for services like exam forms ,so even if you enrolled years ago, you may need one before your next TEE form.

Before the DEB ID: You Need an ABC ID First

Here’s the part that confuses everyone: the DEB ID is built on top of your ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits). No ABC ID, no DEB ID. So the process is really two steps, and we’ll do them in order.

Step 1 — Create your ABC ID (10 minutes)

You can create it through DigiLocker, which is the smoothest route.

1. Go to DigiLocker (digilocker.gov.in) and sign in — or sign up with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number if you’re new.
2. Search for “ABC” or “Academic Bank of Credits” in the documents section.
3. Select it, choose your identity details, and generate the ABC ID.
4. Note down the 12-digit ABC ID. Screenshot it too.

The single most important thing at this stage: your name, date of birth, and gender in the ABC/DigiLocker record come from Aadhaar. If your Aadhaar name is spelled differently from your marksheets (a very common Indian problem — “Md” vs “Mohammed,” missing middle names, spacing), sort it out now, because mismatches cause the errors we’ll cover below.

Step 2 — Generate your DEB ID (5 minutes)

1. Go to the UGC DEB portal (deb.ugc.ac.in) and find the Student Registration / DEB ID section.
2. Enter your ABC ID — the system pulls your details from it.
3. Verify the auto-filled information carefully. Do not rush this screen.
4. Submit, and your DEB ID is generated. Save it in at least two places.

That’s it. The DEB ID doesn’t expire and you don’t need a new one per application — one ID serves your academic life across recognised institutions.

Using the DEB ID in Your IGNOU Form

During IGNOU’s online admission or re-registration, the form asks for your DEB ID (and often the ABC ID too). Enter it exactly as issued. The portal validates it against the DEB database — which is where errors appear if something’s mismatched.

The 5 Errors That Reject Forms (And the Fix for Each)

Error 1 — “DEB ID invalid.” Usually a simple typo, or you’re entering the ABC ID in the DEB field (or vice versa). They are different numbers. Fix: re-copy each ID from your saved screenshots into the correct field.

Error 2 — Name mismatch. Your Aadhaar says “Priya Sharma,” your 12th marksheet says “Priya Kumari Sharma,” and the validation fails. Fix: the cleanest long-term solution is aligning your Aadhaar to your academic records (or vice versa). Short-term, contact your IGNOU regional centre with both documents — RCs deal with this weekly and can advise the accepted route for the current cycle.

Error 3 — DOB mismatch. Same cause as above, different field. Fix: same route — the record with the error must be corrected at its source (Aadhaar via an enrolment centre, or the academic record via the board).

Error 4 — “ABC ID not found/linked.” You created the ABC ID minutes ago and the DEB portal can’t see it yet. Fix: wait a few hours and retry. Sync delays are normal. This is exactly why you should not do this on the last date.

Error 5 — Portal down or OTP not arriving. Deadline weeks overload these portals. Fix: try early morning (6–8 AM) when traffic is lowest, and ensure your Aadhaar-linked mobile is active for OTPs. And again — start days before the deadline, not hours.

Old IGNOU Students: Do You Need One?

If you enrolled before 2024-25, you didn’t need a DEB ID at admission — but IGNOU has been progressively requiring it for ongoing services like examination forms. The safe move: create it now regardless. It costs nothing, takes 15 minutes, and removes a future blocker before your next exam form deadline.

The Timeline Advice Nobody Follows (Please Follow It)

Create your ABC ID and DEB ID at least one week before you plan to submit your IGNOU form. Every step above is easy in isolation; what makes it stressful is doing all of it, discovering a name mismatch, and needing an Aadhaar correction — on the last date. The students who suffer are almost never blocked by the system. They’re blocked by the calendar.
